What are Nutraceuticals?
It is evident from the name that nutraceuticals derived from the term nutrients obtained from natural food sources having insinuation for promoting health. It carries an extensive variety of physiological benefits depending upon its formulations including immunity boosting health, persistent pain management, and improving largely wellness. Nutraceuticals are quite popular among the sections that prefer natural products and treatments.
Nutraceuticals are divided differently in different countries. They may be referred to as dietary supplements, functional foods, medicinal foods, and/ or pharmaceuticals although the difference is quite nominal in different categories and they are commonly used interchangeably.
All nutraceutical products are meant to undergo strict regulations, though these regulations to vary worldwide. Irrespective of jurisdiction, industry regulations often fall into a grey area where information and expectations can be unclear, misleading, and in some cases, potentially dangerous. Manufacturers and customers should be conscious of their nutraceutical set of laws to make secure and up to date decisions. Nutraceutical manufacturers too remain under pressure as they have to follow strict compliance with all the rules and regulations meant.
Nutraceutical manufacturers are supposed to maintain a strict standard for composition so that the exact benefit of the supplements can be attained. The right quantity of ingredients, the right composition, standard structure, etc all contribute towards making successful supplements required to cater to any demand. Once they fulfill all the basic standards then they are supposed to clear all the quality tests meant to obtain the accreditations or approvals to launch them in the market. One thing is very evident that obtaining these standards like GMP, and EFSA is not easy. Nutraceutical manufacturers have to work perfectly to get the same. If we see European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)which defines and controls nutraceuticals as food supplements in a form of a concentrated dose of nutrients to accompany normal dietary intake and provide nutritional and physiological benefits. The main focus is laid upon the ingredients inclusive of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, and the levels at which they are present in the supplement. They have a rigid and strict standard where they specify the EU must contain substances approved and defined as per their bylaws.
This strict approach to nutraceutical regulations puts a large responsibility on supplement manufacturers to ensure a high level of quality controls to avoid endangering consumers and penalties. Specific regulations may vary but manufacturers should always take the accountability for traceability and eminence control throughout the complete practice. Risks can be mitigated with methodical testing at each step of Ingredients (testing of raw material and contamination), formula (functional and repeatable measurement of the ingredients present) manufacturing (ensuring GMP) and End-products testing.
